Abstract

Indonesian society, deeply rooted in collectivist culture, positions the family as a significant source of social pressure for younger generations through material-oriented comparisons of success standards, while Generation Z faces tension between family expectations and an increasingly individualistic personal value orientation. This study aims to analyze the reception of Generation Z audiences toward the representation of social pressure and the comparison of success standards within the family as depicted in the film Tunggu Aku Sukses Nanti, employing a descriptive qualitative approach through reception analysis based on Stuart Hall's encoding-decoding model, conducted via semi-structured in-depth interviews with five Generation Z informants and a psychologist as the key informant. The findings reveal that in the social pressure dimension, one informant occupied the dominant-hegemonic position and four informants the negotiated position, with no oppositional position identified, whereas in the success standards dimension, one informant held the dominant-hegemonic position, two informants the negotiated position, and two informants the oppositional position, actively rejecting material definitions of success in favor of a broader framework encompassing mental health, self-development, and work-life balance. The study concludes that Generation Z functions as an active audience whose interpretation of the film's messages varies according to individual life experiences, economic background, and personal values, consistent with the core premise of Stuart Hall's reception theory.
